Overlook Golf Course Review

Overlook Golf Course is situated 4 miles outside of downtown Lancaster City Pennsylvania in Manheim Township. The course is a par 70 at 6,205 yards with a slope rating of 110 on Bent Grass. The Overlook Park also has a double-sided driving range, putting green, and the Sand Trap Lounge. We have compiled everything you need to know into this Overlook Golf Course Review.

Course History

The course construction started in 1927 when Abe Dombach’s doctor told him that he needed to get out of the house more and get fresh air. Abe took up golfing and then later wanted to build his course. So he gathered some local farmers and construction workers to make what is now Overlook Golf Course with the help of MacGregor Sporting Goods Co.

Overlook Features and Amenities

Overlook Golf Course is located in Overlook Community Park and is run by Manheim Township Municipality. The community park includes a library, skating park/rink, pool, disk golf course, baseball fields, dog park, a restaurant, and a mini-golf course. That being said, the most important features are the golf features!

  2. Practice Putting Green

  3. Pro Shop

  4. PGA Tour Training with Ken Ord & Pete Cunningham

  5. Sand Trap Lounge Snack Bar/Restaurant

Overlook Golf Course Rating

I may be a bit biased because I live in Manheim Township and play this course so often, and I spend way too much time on the driving range. However, I will keep this as unbiased as possible. Our Reviews are based on a strict 5-star system.

Course Design –   ★★

This is where I will be a bit harsh on Overlook Golf Course.  This course was designed by a man who has zero golf architecture experience, and it wasn’t meant to be a masterpiece. It was intended to be straight playable and be a typical muni course. The complaint that I have is that some of the holes on the back 9 are very similar, and they can become redundant.

Par-3’s: There a 4 different par 3’s with a good variety of lengths. The longest par 3 is 211 yards, and the shortest par 3 is 158 yards.

Par-4’s: 12 holes are par 4’s. This comes with the territory being a par 70 muni course. There are 2 drivable holes, one GREAT par 4 (#5), and the rest blend together.

Par-5’s: Although there are only 2 par 5’s. They are 2 completely different holes that can be reached in 2. You open your round with #1 being an uphill par 5 that plays longer than what’s on the scorecard. The second par 5 is on the back 9, and it is a downhill hole that you can reach in 2 pretty quickly and is a scoring hole!

Course Amenities & Price –   ★★★

Overlook has excellent amenities for a muni course. Small putting green to get your speed right before the round. The driving range is a great place to get the swing dialed. The driving range has two sides, has lights, and is all turf (NO MATS).

The Sand Lounge is a small snack stand, great for grabbing a bite to eat at the turn or after the round. It’s nothing crazy, but you need food when swinging 72+ times!

The Pro Shop has balls, some older-model clubs, shoes, and bags! It’s not a spot I would shop. However, it is excellent for them to have that. It’s not a course that you will lose 12 balls, but they have a good selection of balls if needed.

Course Difficulty –   ★★★

Overlook Golf Course plays very average. It’s a simple layout; most holes are straight. However, the course does have some sneaky elevation changes. Some approach shots are up to greens that you can’t see the pin placement.

It’s not a course that you will find yourself struggling for distance. It’s shorter, and your par 5’s are reachable. The greens present a stern challenge as they are faster than you think!

Course Conditions- ★★★★

Course conditions are pretty phenomenal for this being a municipal course. The greens have some movement that can make them quick. The greens hold up pretty well for how much traffic they get. However, if you are a sunset golfer, you will notice they get bumpy towards the end of the day.

Bunkers have good sand, and as of this blog being written (January 2022), they have been doing some refill/bunker repair over the winter.
