Crafted by the renowned designer P.B. Dye and unveiled in 2000, Iron Valley Golf Club spans an impressive 7,026 yards with a par of 72. The course boasts a challenging course rating of 73.6 and a slope rating of 136. Notably, Golf Magazine has distinguished Iron Valley as the #8 best course to play in Pennsylvania, highlighting its status as a genuine P.B. Dye masterpiece.

Authors Notes

Located in Lebanon County PA, Iron Valley Golf Club is located on the southern mountain range of the county. You will notice this on your drive up to the course. While in the car you are saying to yourself “Did we make a wrong turn?”. Then you round a corner and you see the club house and 1-2 golf holes, then you think to yourself “where is the rest of the course”.

As you walk to the clubhouse, the rugged terrain becomes evident. That is because the P.B. Dye (Pete Dye’s Son) designed course is located on an old mine site. Which creates two very distinct front and back nines. The Tailings Nine (front nine) and “The Mine Nine” (the back nine).

Upon crossing the road to the first tee, you wind through the woods on the cart path, revealing the front nine. Each hole on the font is visible from any angle, offering a captivating experience. For more on the course design, explore our dedicated section.

Iron Valley stands as a personal favorite, a treat to play intermittently due to its marvel. Navigating the challenging terrain is a unique and incredible experience, making it essential to approach the course with readiness. Iron Valley—a treat best enjoyed in moderation (for your sanity)

Course History

Established in the spring of 2000, Iron Valley Golf Club is situated on an expansive 352-acre parcel of land, situated at the crossroads of Lancaster and Lebanon Counties in Pennsylvania. This course takes form on the grounds that once housed the Cornwall Iron Mines. This historical site was renowned for 235 years of Iron Ore operation (hence the name Iron Valley). Mining came to an abrupt halt in June 1972 when floods from Hurricane Agnes flooded the underground mines.

The PB Dye-designed course faced initial challenges after opening. The course was experiencing drainage issues on its greens, all 18 greens underwent extensive reconstruction. Following four years of operation, the course underwent a change in ownership, being acquired by a commercial real estate company. This real estate company has been keeping Iron Valley Golf Club looking sharp!

Iron Valley Golf Club Ratings

The Rookery Golf Club Ratings

Iron Valley Golf Club stands as a testament to the fusion of extreme terrain and exceptional golfing experiences. Golf enthusiasts embark on a memorable journey through its challenging fairways and immaculate greens. From the moment golfers step onto the first tee, Iron Valley promises a harmonious blend of scenic tranquility and strategic play, making it a sought-after destination for both casual players and seasoned golfers.

Course Design – ★★★★

Designed by P.B. Dye, the youngest son of the acclaimed "Picasso of Golf Course Design," Pete Dye, Iron Valley Golf Club boasts an expansive 352-acre property offering a challenging 7,026-yard journey from the tips. With a par of 72, the course presents a formidable challenge, featuring a course rating of 73.6 and a slope rating of 136, ensuring a demanding yet rewarding golfing experience for players of all levels.

Par-3’s: Iron Valley has four par-3s (Hole 5, 8, 12, & 17). Let's dig into all four holes.

Hole 5: A Dye family designed course wouldn't be complete without an island green, and at Iron Valley, this iconic feature takes a unique twist with a distinctive northeastern flavor. Unlike the railway ties at sawgrass, boulders gracefully encircle the green, adding a rugged charm to the landscape. With a mere 23-yard depth, players are challenged to execute precise wedge shots onto this green, making it a standout and essential hole that defines the character of the entire course.

Hole 8: A truly distinctive design characterizes this hole, featuring an uphill shot to a green where only the top of the flagstick is visible. This hole demands precision to avoid the trees bordering the left side of the hole. It's crucial to note that on this hole, opting for more club is advisable, as it plays considerably longer than indicated on the scorecard.

Hole 12: The standout par-3 for me on this course is the 12th hole, situated on the mine nine of the course. The unique character of the mine nine becomes evident, especially on this hole. Positioned atop a sizable rock pile, you ascend a hill to the tee boxes, then play a shot down to a green that spans 32 yards and is intricately framed by imposing rock formations and trees.

Par-4’s: The holes significantly influence golf course design, as they present a balance between challenge and playability. I will not cover all the par-4's but I will highlight my favorite.

Hole 1: Let's delve into the strategic challenge posed by the inaugural hole – a dye-abolical start to your round. Beginning with the course's top-ranked handicap hole, there's no gentle introduction here. While the 400-yard journey from the tee is relatively straightforward, the real test comes with the approach shot to a narrow, uphill green perched atop the hill, spanning a mere 15 yards in width. A miss puts you in a precarious position, as the ball might roll to the bottom, necessitating a demanding pitch back up a 30-foot incline. An undeniably formidable opening to the course.

Hole 6: If you're seeking a par-4 opportunity to reclaim a shot, this is the ideal candidate! A generously wide fairway characterizes this hole, providing ample room off the tee. The second shot to the green is uncomplicated, and even if you happen to miss the target, a straightforward chip awaits, leading to a fairly flat putting surface.

Hole 10: This hole is unmissable, especially when discussing the captivating opening of the mine nine. Plunging over 100 feet down the hill into the mine, it presents a thrilling descent that significantly extends your shot due to the elevated tee box. The result? A downhill shot that, your longer drive, becomes a more manageable distance, adding an exciting dimension to the play on this unique hole.

Hole 18: The closing hole features a dogleg right and an uphill slope from the tee. Your second shot aims directly at the clubhouse, targeting a green protected by three bunkers. Given the undulating nature of the green, it's crucial to carefully select the correct level for your approach shot.

Par-5’s: This is where Iron Valley shows its teeth and shows its unique use of the terrain.

Hole 3: Ranked as the most accessible par-5, this hole boasts a spacious fairway, though it's crucial to steer clear of the principal nose bunkers on the left. Opting to attack the green in two is a viable strategy, but beware – the green features two levels. Precision is key to ensure your ball lands on the correct level, as a misjudgment could result in a challenging putt.

Hole 7: At 512 yards, this dogleg-left hole presents a narrow fairway off the tee, flanked by trees on the right and a pond on the left with the fairway sloping towards the pond. The approach to the green is particularly demanding, with the putting surface measuring only 15 yards in depth and a pond to the left. Opting to lay up and secure a more favorable attacking angle to the green is a strategic move, offering a prudent alternative without compromising on the challenge.

Hole 13: Discovering the origin of the name "mine nine" becomes apparent on this particular hole. A blind tee shot over a mound in the fairway awaits, followed by a downslope where the fairway concludes at 330 yards. Exercise caution off the tee, especially if you're a longer hitter. Upon cresting the hill, a dramatic downhill shot unfolds, possibly requiring you to navigate over a sizable pond on the left. From the summit, the green below appears like a small button, rendering this hole a truly unique and captivating experience.

Hole 16: This par-5 might be the shortest of the par-5 holes. It is really not. Your drive off the tee is up a large hill that will stop any roll. This hole doglegs to the right and is guarded by 3 pot bunkers. The green is pretty simple and could be a scoring hole if you can get there in regulation.

Course Difficulty – ★★★★

No sugar-coating here – Iron Valley is undeniably challenging, evident in its substantial course rating of 73.6 and a slope rating of 136. The topography distinguishes it from other courses in the Lancaster/Lebanon area, featuring a tree-lined mountain layout and distinctive water features. Simply bombing shots won't suffice; strategic play is essential. Smart decisions, including well-timed lay-ups, often prove to be the wisest choices on this demanding course.

Course Amenities & Price – ★★★★1/2

Iron Valley Golf Club provides a golfing experience that extends beyond the fairways, offering impressive amenities and affordable pricing. The facility features a well-equipped pro shop catering to all your golfing needs, and its inviting clubhouse serves as an ideal spot for post-game relaxation. Ahead of your round, Iron Valley offers a driving range for honing your shots and a practice putting green to refine your putting speeds.

Food options abound, including a convenient snack bar at the turn for replenishing supplies. The Miners Pub and Restaurant is an excellent post-round dining choice, complete with a patio overlooking the 18th green, enhancing the overall experience.

While pricing varies by season, Iron Valley's rates are steeper in the summer months, yet become quite reasonable during the early spring and late fall, providing flexibility for golf enthusiasts throughout the year.

Course Conditions- ★★★★

Iron Valley Golf Club consistently maintains excellent course conditions. However, this is subject to seasonal variations; excess water can soften the course and extend its length. Nevertheless, the greens consistently provide a true roll, and I've never encountered any issues with them. The fairways stand out as some of my favorites in the area, remaining true and preventing the ball from settling into the grass.
